Strengthening your Immune System for the Summer

Published On: May 20, 2024|

Want to get the most out of summer? Boost your immune system! With these tips, you can boost immunity and get the most out of your favorite season.

Boost summer immunity

Summer should be a time for carefree fun. But it’s hard to ignore the news reports urging us to fear every new virus under the sun.

If the media is squawking about bird flu and teasing us with a new COVID variant called “Flirt“, should you be concerned? If you ask FLCCC Senior Fellow Dr. Kat Lindley, the answer is clear: don’t worry about the viruses!

Instead of getting bogged down, here are some tips to take back the summer:

  1. Strengthen Your Immune System
  2. Symptoms to Watch Out For
  3. Early Treatment if You Get Sick

Before we dive in, remember that excess heat can affect immune function. For example, heat stress from a hot summer day can:

  • Cause dehydration
  • Impair your immune cells (like white blood cells)
  • Induce general immunosuppression

While the sun gives us life in many ways, remember that seasonal changes and heat exposure can impact an otherwise healthy immune system. So, let’s counteract that and make sure your body has everything needed to make the most of the summer.

To get started with some quick tips, check out Dr. Lindley with host Jan Jeffcoat on The National Desk, talking summer immunity and more!

1. Strengthen Your Immune System

If you want to boost immunity, there are plenty of natural ways to do so. For example:

  • Natural Interventions: Better sleep, stress reduction, adequate movement
  • Natural Remedies: Supplements, vitamins, herbal remedies

Dr. Lindley says that the things you can do to strengthen your immune system are very simple:

“Sleep well, reduce stress, eat a health diet, healthy lifestyle, get into the sun—I always say, ‘go out with your family, laugh, enjoy’, these kind of things can improve your immunity… I do recommend that everybody take vitamin D, vitamin C, melatonin—I love elderberries, especially in children. And I like NAC, which is ‘N-acetylcysteine’.”

If you get started with the above, you’ll be on the right track. If you’re looking for more, you’re in the right place! FLCCC has created a number of resources designed to help improve your body’s immune system.

I-PREVENT: COVID, Flu, and RSV

I-PREVENT is FLCCC’s prevention protocol designed to support your immune system and prevent infections from COVID, the Flu, RSV, and even the common cold. Much of what we recommend in this guide is widely available, inexpensive, and safe.

FLCCC I-PREVENT

“Just-in-Case” Kit for COVID, RSV and Flu

The I-PREVENT protocol is your health blueprint. The “Just-in-Case” Kit is your safety net. If you are looking for ways to keep COVID cases low this summer, start here!

With our guide, it’s easy to boost immune function in the summer heat:

  • Mouthwash with CPC and 1% povidone iodine nasal spray
  • Vitamin D3, vitamin C, and zinc
  • Melatonin, quercetin, resveratrol or a flavonoid combo, and elderberry
  • N-acetylcysteine (NAC), Nigella sativa, curcumin, and probiotics
  • Aspirin, B vitamins, and Omega-3 supplements

2. Symptoms to Watch Out For

Even when we treat our bodies right, it’s possible for pesky pathogens to break through. When you first spot symptoms, that’s when you may consider shifting from “prevention” to “treatment“.

So what symptoms to look for most adults?

Covid Symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Fatigue
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Muscle aches
  • Allergy symptoms
  • Loss of taste and/or smell

Flu Symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Malaise
  • Nausea
  • Sore throat
  • Muscle aches
  • Nasal congestion

Here’s a question we often get: are the symptoms different for adults and children? With COVID, it is rarely severe for children. Flu is a slightly different story as the symptoms can be more severe for children. These can include:

  • High fever
  • Ear infections
  • Dehydration
  • Vomiting and diarrhea

If you start seeing these symptoms, it doesn’t always mean you need to run to the doctor right away. Depending on your risk, however, early treatment options are available.

3. Early Treatment if You Get Sick

When we get sick, the earlier the illness is treated the better. FLCCC has developed treatment strategies that can help you feel better: The I-CARE Series.

In the above treatment strategies, you’ll find everything you need to treat summer viruses.

Enjoy Your Summer!

With these tips, there’s no reason you can’t have a stronger immune system this summer. Stay proactive, follow our guidelines, and make the most of the sunny days ahead while keeping your health in check. Here’s to a fun and healthy summer!
