Dr. Varon, a professor at the University of Houston College of Medicine, is the Chairman and President of Dorrington Medical Associates. Formerly, he served as Chairman of the Board of United Memorial Medical Center Premier and United General Hospital. He is the former Chief of Critical Care and COVID-19 unit at United Memorial Medical Center and the Former Chief of Critical Care Services and Past Chief of Staff at United Memorial Medical Center and University General Hospital.

He teaches medicine, surgery, and emergency medicine at several universities in Mexico, the Middle East, and Europe and he is the Associate Dean for the Caribbean Medical University.

An avid researcher, Dr, Varon has contributed more than 950 peer-reviewed journal articles, 15 full textbooks, and 18 dozen book chapters to the medical literature.  He is also a reviewer for multiple journals and currently serves as Editor-in-Chief for Critical Care and Shock, Open Respiratory Medicine Journal and Current Respiratory Medicine Reviews.

Dr. Varon has won many prestigious awards and is considered among the top physicians in the United States. Dr. Varon is also known for his groundbreaking contributions to critical care medicine in the fields of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and therapeutic hypothermia. He has developed and studied technology for selective brain cooling and is also a well-known expert in the area of hypertensive crises management. With Dr. Carlos Ayus, he co-described the hyponatremia associated with extreme exercise syndrome — also known as the “Varon-Ayus syndrome” and with Mr. James Boston co-described the healthcare provider anxiety syndrome also known as the “Boston-Varon syndrome”.

Along with Professor Luc Montagnier (2008 Nobel Prize winner for Medicine), Dr. Varon created the Medical Prevention and Research Institute in Houston, Texas, which conducts work on basic science projects.

Dr. Varon has lectured in over 62 different countries around the globe and has appeared in over 4,000 national and international television and radio shows, showcasing his techniques and care of patients.

After completing medical training at the UNAM Medical School in Mexico City, Dr. Varon served an internship in internal medicine at Providence Hospital/George Washington University, Washington, D.C. and a subsequent residency in internal medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, California. Dr. Varon also served fellowships in critical care medicine and pulmonary diseases at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Dr. Varon is well known for his academic and clinical work in the management of acute hypertension and has published extensively on this subject. In addition, Dr. Varon has worked on studies related to ethical issues in acute care medicine and has several peer-reviewed publications on this controversial subject.

He became globally known for his work on COVID-19 and his co-development of the MATH+ protocol to care for hospitalized patients. For this, he has received multiple awards, including a proclamation by the Mayor of the City of Houston of the “Dr. Joseph Varon Day.” Dr. Varon also won the “Houston Humanitarian Award” for his work during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, Dr. Varon was presented the “Global Citizen Award” by the United Nations.
