Persistent Viral Infection and the Risk of Heart Failure

In this in-vitro study, researchers demonstrate that a cardiac tissue infected with SARS-COV-2 can contain the viral genome for days after infection. Not only is the viral genome present, but viral reactivation occurs as soon as this cardiac tissue undergoes a hypoxic stress state. The researchers recommend that clinicians look for the presence of the virus, or its genome, or cardiac troponin levels, to monitor at risk hearts. Let’s review.
