MIS-C After COVID: Understanding the Syndrome in Children
In this episode of Kid’s Corner, Dr. Liz Mumper discusses MIS-C (Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children) in the United States and the incidence of this diagnosis with COVID-19. Dr. Mumper also explains if receiving COVID-19 vaccinations prevent MIS-C by breaking down this study.
People also refer to MIS-C as Pediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome temporally associated with SARS-COV2 (PIM-TS).
Common symptoms of MIS-C in babies show as a rash and/or diarrhea. In older children, the symptoms are respiratory.
MIS-C is similar to Kawasaki’s disease, although the symptoms usually resolve in contrast to Kawasaki’s disease.
Treatment for MIS-C includes:
- supportive care and observation
- maintaining volume status as dehydration worsens symptoms
- steroids
- IVIG
- Interleukin blockers
- anti-coagulation
- cardiology work-up with an EKG and cardiac echo
