To simplify both the technology and the user experience, we will be making a big change to the community site structure.

Previously, we kept groups and forums as separate systems. Forums allow for long-form discussions, while groups allow for social networking (connections, activity feeds, etc.).

This means you could create a post in both the Medical Mavericks group feed and the Medical Mavericks private forum. This confused users about where the best place to post their content was, as both places seemed fitting.

We have now merged forums and groups entirely. To access the forum discussions, you must be a member of the group. You still have a group feed, but only moderators and admins will be able to post content there, reserved for when an important broadcast is needed.

Otherwise, the only place to start a discussion as a group member is the Discussions tab (aka Group Forums).

All existing forum content has been maintained but put under the direct control of a group. This also means any subscriptions to a specific form have been lost. To get notifications of new content and activity, you can either subscribe to the group (via the bell icon) or to a specific discussion thread inside the group. You no longer need to subscribe to a forum, as that is covered by the group notifications.

The number of groups has also been greatly reduced. We have long-term plans for a lot of community features, but these spaces have not been developed yet and were just adding to the confusion and feelings of being overwhelmed.

The current group list will focus on the membership groups, such as Healthcare Enthusiasts and Medical Mavericks, where we want to try to build more engaging and unique content.

With this change, we were able to enhance the landing page to make it more group-focused.

You can now filter groups based on the ones you are a member of or sort by activity, most members, etc.

Search has also been simplified down to a single community search, which will search members, groups, group posts, and group discussions.

There are other benefits, such as streamlining the moderation tools. But there are also downsides to this move.

As you use the new system, please give us your feedback via the new Community Feedback group. This is a public group, so anyone can join. Click the “join” button and create a discussion thread.
