Ivermectin was first discovered by microbiologist Satoshi Omura in Japan in 1973 and has been approved for use in humans since 1987. Since then, over 4 billion doses have been distributed worldwide. The WHO includes it on list of essential medicines. In 2015 the research behind the wonder drug was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine.
