Essential Oils for summer pests

We’ve been experimenting with essential oils to deal with the creepy crawlers that come with summer. Some were very successful last summer.

A lot of this stuff we had on hand, and we already distilled our water regularly.

For ticks, we have been spraying down our dogs with this mixture. Our area is swarming with ticks, so it was a major issue, even with the usual tick treatments. They would still carry the ticks, even if the ticks wouldn’t latch.

For mosquitos aka skeeters, we have been playing with this recipe and still gauging success vs. other methods.

We also had a big spider issue in one of the bedrooms, with regular nighttime bites. We misted the room with peppermint and immediately no more bites.

Next, we will be making our own cinnamon oils and spraying our fruit trees to see how it does with some of those harmful pests.

Does anyone else have nice tips and tricks for the summer critters?

Cinnamon works great! And it’s harmless for the good insects and the bees 🐝. One always should know what is bad for the good insects and bees. Some use for example Neem, but Neem can be toxic for the bees and we definitely don’t want to harm them. When you want to use it anyway, it should be used in the evening or night and definitely NOT when the plant is blooming. I do not use it.

I also use cinnamon powder on the soil of house plants and on the soil in the garden house to keep mold at bay.

I use cloves in a boil on my terras (with a drop of lemon or lemon eucalyptus), in a bag above doors, on window sills. Cloves and cloves essential oil are very effective against mosquitos, flies, ants, wasps, moths and their larvae, fleas, mites, … I put a drop of the oil on my garden shoes and socks. But careful, the essential oil is very strong!

Clove oil is also very effective to kill mold in the house.

This is great stuff! I’ll be passing this along as we’ve had issues with moldy soil and other items you brought up.

Thank you Erik for starting this topic 🙏. Loved your info!!!

This is not essential oil related (I hope you don’t mind) and you probably already know, but you can make a really great fertilizer and herbicide with stinging nettle. Pick the young tops (leave the roots and never pick the tops when they are seeding) – put them in a big tub WITH A LID and fill the tub with water. Let it steep for about 14 days. You will know when it’s ready to use: it stinks like hell 🤮. You can use the ‘juice’ as a very potent fertiliser and also to spray veggies against pests like mites, aphids, diseases like mildew. Regularly put some fresh stinging nettle in tub and keep the tub filled with water so you can keep using it the whole season. Some advise to boil the water but that’s really not necessary. I use a big black tub in a sunny spot FAR AWAY from the house. The odor is really horrible so in case you have neighbours nearby, don’t put the tub near your neighbours house and preferable spray late in the evening or early in the morning.

It’s also GREAT for human health: ‘Stinging nettle has antiproliferative, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic, anti-infectious, hypotensive, and antiulcer characteristics, as well as the ability to prevent cardiovascular disease, in all parts of the plant’ (see link).

It also detoxes the body (blood purifying), good against allergie, eczema, joint inflammation, arthritis, gout, urinary problems, enlarged prostat, anemia, … It is also anti parasitic; for example it has great anti leishmaniasis activity.

You can make soup with the young tops and you can dry the tops and leaves for tea.

My family and I commonly use citronella based essential oil sprays/creams to prevent/reduce mosquito bites. Works quite well. I often add a little lavender and tea tree essential oils into it also.

As a side note I have researched essential oils a lot and made a youtube video about some groundbreaking research I discovered: youtube.com/watch?v=eTsDUN9Jnt0 (i wont post it as a clickable link just in case this is frowned upon for a new member such as myself but you can paste the video code eTsDUN9Jnt0 into youtube site directly if you prefer)
It’s been shadow banned by YouTube. After you watch the video you’ll realise why. It is a game-changer in my opinion.

I found the video and YES, OMG and WOW, no other comments needed! 🙏🤩. Thank you so much! I’m already sharing 👍

I use pomegranate seed oil as a carrier for use of essential oils on the skin. I think it might greatly add to the effects of the Thyme and Frankincense essential oils on skin cancer. Would love to hear your opinion.

PSO would likely have a synergistic effect but I cannot say for certain. Glad you liked the video – it’s my first and only YouTube video. And thanks for spreading the word – it helps. I have a few case reports with amazing results. I will likely make a dedicated thread about it at some point.
